Basic Setup

Tongits is played by three players using a standard 52-card deck. The dealer distributes 12 cards to each of the two non-dealers and 13 cards to the dealer. The remaining cards form a draw pile at the centre of the table.

The dealer starts the game by discarding one card to a discard pile. From then on, each player takes a turn drawing from either the draw pile or the discard pile, then discarding one card.

Valid Melds

Cards are laid down in melds — combinations of three or more cards. Valid melds include:

Set (Three of a Kind / Four of a Kind): Three or four cards of the same rank regardless of suit.
Sequence (Run): Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit — for example, 5-6-7 of Hearts.

Once a meld is placed on the table, opponents can add matching cards to it on their turn — this is called tongpak or sapaw in street games, and it keeps the gameplay dynamic and competitive.

Important: Card Values

Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points each. Aces are worth 1 point. Numbered cards carry their face value. When the game ends by draw pile exhaustion, the player with the lowest total hand value wins the pot.
